Project Description
Lesotho is a small, land locked and mountainous country in South Africa, roughly
the size of Vancouver Island with a population of approximately 2.2 million. It
is 1,000 metres above sea level and though very hot in the summer it does get
very cold in the winter. Many of the people there live in poverty with a life
expectancy of 34.47 years, mostly due to the HIV virus and poor nutrition.
In April 2010, two members of the Rotary Club of Pemberton Centennial travelled to Lesotho and worked on an Africa Library Project at the SOS Children’s Village Orphanage, located just outside the capital of Maseru. During that visit, the Maloti Rotary Club of Maseru made a request for used medical equipment and supplies to help stock their clinics.
After the return of our Rotarians and discussion with our club members, our Rotary club agreed to continue supporting our involvement with the county of Lesotho and helping the children in Maseru and surrounding villages. In October, 2011 two members of the Rotary Club of Pemberton Centennial will be travelling to Lesotho, Africa to assist with the distribution of used medial equipment, hand made quilts, soccer equipment, donated jackets from Whistler Blackcomb and a variety of school and office supplies.
